About Mold

What is mold?

Mold is an organism that belongs to the fungi kingdom. There are over 100,000 species of mold, that come in a wide variety of colors, from black, to yellow and green. Mold grows by the spread of microscopic spores.

How do I know if I have mold?

Mold can often be identified visually, or by the common musty smell associated with it. Air and surface testing is also available to identify mold by more scientific means.

Where does mold grow?

Mold is often found in damp, poorly ventilated areas of a home or business, such as a basement, attic, or crawlspace. However it can occur anywhere that has been exposed to large amounts of moisture for example: the site of a leaking pipe or foundation, compromised roofing, or areas subject to condensation. When the conditions are right growth can occur in as little as 48 hours.

Why should mold be remediated?

The infestation of mold in your home or business can lead to structural and health issues. An illness commonly referred to as "Sick Building Syndrome" is an allergic reaction to mold. Symptoms can include itchy eyes, congestion, and difficulty breathing.  Stachybotrys chartarum aka "Toxic black mold", has been linked to more adverse health effects. Mold issues can also lead to deterioration of structures. Porous building materials like wood and drywall can quickly rot and begin to lose integrity when compromised. If not remediated in a timely manner the infestation can spread rapidly, resulting in the contamination of entire spaces or buildings.
